The Mystical Number – For those who know me, this is the weather I thrive in! Cold, rainy, windy… I’m in my element. I know, however, that I am one of a very few.
That is why it makes my heart sing to see more and more new face at the Studio as the chilly winds begin to blow. This morning, whilst meditating with the 8:15 class, I was reminded why I love doing what I do: to see 12 warm and snuggly Earth Angels enjoying the 108 soothing OMs humming through the room, accessing deeper levels of breath, and practicing the ancient mysteries I have been privy to collecting over my lifetime… well, it fills me with JOY!
Then, someone asked me a question: “Why does the number 108 come up so much in Yoga?” – Well… as promised.. the answer is right here in this newsletter.
Finally, this evening as I was saying “goodbye” to one of our treasured teachers, and seeing the healthy pink glow on everyone’s cheeks after class, I was delighted to hear one lady say:
“You know what, I thought this was going to be another lazy winter… but tonight I met myself on the mat – and SHE is worth spending a few rainy months getting to know. I’ve come home!”
And THAT is why we do what we do. Keep reading for the meaning of the mystical number – 108.

The meaning of the mystical number – 108
Numbers are magical things, and in the ancient Vedic sciences (of which, yoga is one) the great rishis/sages knew much more about the inner workings of the cosmos than what modern scientists would like to believe.
Although the subject is extensive, here is why we have 108 beads on our malas (similar concept to a rosary):
-The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun. The average distance of the Moon from the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.
-Around the time the ancient Vedic texts were being collected, far away Stonehenge was built—the Sarsen Circle is 108 feet in diameter
-In astrology, the metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108
-Were we to draw a five-pointed star (representing a human being) inside a circle (a planet) and we would find 108 degrees staring back at us from every angle
-There are 108 energy lines, or nadis, converging to form the heart chakra, and 108 marmas (pressure points) or sacred parts of the body
-108 degrees Fahrenheit is the internal temperature at which the human body’s vital organs begin to fail from overheating
-According to estimates, every day we breathe 21,600 times out of which 10,800 are solar energy and 10, 800 are lunar energy. Multiplying 108 X 100 is 10,800
-There are 12 zodiac signs and 9 planets. 12 x 9 = 108
-There are 54 letters in Sanskrit each can be mentioned as masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) aspect, totalling to 108
-THIS IS THE KIND OF STUFF WE COVER IN THE TEACHER TRAINING… Juicy huh?! There is much much more
