A beautiful, functional home with a minimal theme is not easy to design especially for some of us who pretty much buy anything and everything. However, good minimalist decorating is not only captivating but also enviable.
And, because less is definitely more when it comes to exceptional minimalist design, here are five tips to help you incorporate the basics of the simple style into your.
1. One room at a time
It’s not easy to create a minimal design in the entire house at once. That is, of course unless you’re moving into a new place. So, focus on one room. Let it be your center of calm and use it to inspire you to simplify the next room. You use this same concept outside (a small space at a time).
2. Start with furniture
Furniture takes up the most space in a room. So, it’s important to start simplifying a room by looking at the furniture. The fewer the pieces of furniture, the better. Eliminate furniture without sacrificing comfort and livability. Also, if you can, go for plain, simple furniture with solid, subdued colors. Always ask yourself if every item in the room is truly essential. And, if you can live without it, let it go. Strip the room down to its essentials and then add a few choice items later.
3. Clear floors and surfaces
Your floors have to be completely clear. There should be no clutter the floor, nothing stacked or stored on the floor. You can either trash it, donate it or find a place for it out of sight. Same goes for flat surfaces. Only leave one or two simple decorations. It will make everything so much more minimal-looking.
4. Simple artwork
Some people consider minimalist looks to be boring. So, to keep a room from being boring, put a simple painting, drawing or photo, framed with a subdued, solid color, or a skull on each wall if you want. Try to leave some walls bare if possible.
5. Store stuff out of sight
This has been said in the above tips, but you should store everything in drawers and cabinets. Use bookshelves to store books or DVDs or CDs, and maybe a few simple decorations. You’ll probably want to declutter your storage areas especially if you are clearing flat surfaces and the floor, and storing stuff in cabinets and drawers. You can do this in a later stage.
After simplifying a room, give it a couple of days, then look at everything again with a fresh eye. What’s not essential? What can be eliminated or stored out of sight? You can even come back to each room every few months. You’ll be surprised at the things you can simplify even more.

These are great tips.
Hi Melissa
Thanks so much for the feedback – we are pleased you have found them useful
Have a lovely weekend
This is super! Such great tips – I really like the one about taking it room by room, because it can really get so overwhelming all at once. And also putting things out of sight. I never realised it, but clutter has such a negative effect on the way you feel. Since I started decluttering this month properly (first time in YEARS), I’ve noticed how much happier I am. And also – stuff I didn’t even realise I still had chucked in the back of my cupboard… just sitting there, is now being used by someone else who needed the clothes more than what I did. Cool post! 🙂
Thanks Melanie. One mans trash is truly another mans treasure. I still need to get to my shoes(been procrastinating). It’s really amazing how much space you can create.
