During these Winter months it becomes easy to over eat on comfort foods. As a combat to that, I set out to look for a definitive list of the best detox foods, as compiled by someone with valuable knowledge on the subject. Dr Craige Golding shares with us his top 5 detoxification foods.
These are foods that I personally include in my diet in order to facilitate detoxification in my body:
Great for heart health and muscle function. Increases bile production in the liver and has a diuretic effect on the kidneys.
Contains sulphorophanes, indole 3 carbinol and D-glucarate which have a specific effect on detoxification. Sprouts contain 20 times more sulphorophanes than the rest of the plant.
Loaded with vitamins and minerals necessary to promote detox and elimination of toxins. Beetroot also supports galbladder health.
Lemon water is alkalinising and stimulates the release of enzymes converting toxins into water soluble forms.
Garlic is a powerful natural anti-biotic and is an important sulphuric compound essential for detoxification.
These foods are an easy way to help your body detoxify. One can of course also follow a detox programme that has been designed for you as individual by a professional. Whichever route you decide to follow, remember that we live in a toxic environment and need to supply our bodies with enough tools to cleanse.

So this list, while not hugely long, is exact and precise. Personally, I feel like most of these foods can be easily incorporated into your daily meals. Garlic is a staple in home cooking for me, and broccoli is my favourite vegetable. I’ve always had a taste for eating lemons – something my mom considered bizarre – but lemon water is next on my list.
As for beetroot and artichoke, I’m ashamed to say I don’t remember the last time I ate either! Must try harder.
