Top 5 Most Expensive Wines. Whether it’s helping you relax after a long day at work or keeping you company while you engage in polite conversations with strangers at a party.
The exquisite nature of wine is such that it has the potential of making any event classy. While there are cheaper varieties of wine available easily, some of the best wines in the world cost more than most people earn in a lifetime.
The high prices, however, aren’t for nothing; the entire process of production and distribution of wine is a long and cumbersome one and the flavors that the most expensive wines have to offer always leave you craving for more.
Wine has always been a loved by most people. It somehow manages to look, as well as feel elegant.
Here’s a list of the 5 most expensive wines in the world and the exorbitant amounts of money that people out there have actually paid to get their hands on just one bottle of the same.
1. Screaming Eagle Cabernet 1992
While you and I may find it rather ridiculous that someone was willing to spend as much as $500,000 on a single bottle of wine, wine enthusiasts claim that if there is a bottle worth this much of money, it’s this one. Even as early as in 1995, the wine was $75 – making it the most expensive wine that was being produced in California at that time.
However, it was only in 2000 that the wine smashed all records and fetched a whopping $500,000 at the Napa Valley Wine Auction. Surprisingly enough, the wine that left the entire world in awe was not even a decade old at the time that of purchase – debunking the whole concept that older wines are more exquisite.
Even though the price would reduced a bit as the sale was a part of a charity auction, the bottle costs more than any other wine in history.
2. Chateau Margaux 1787
Costing almost $200,000 less than the first wine on this list, the Chateau Margaux was also originally valued at $500,000 by its owner – William Sokolin. The wine is famous for being the most expensive wine that was never sold because a waiter knocked it over and broke the bottle before any sale could take place.
As a result, insurers settled for $225,000, earning the wine a rather decent sum, considering the unfortunate end that it met with.
3. Château Lafite 1787
The age and the reputation of belonging to Thomas Jefferson’s cellar were enough to make any wine as expensive as this one, i.e. $156,450. During his time in France, Jefferson spent a lot of time in the vineyards of Burgundy and Bordeaux; from where he brought back this exquisite bottle of wine.
Finding the initials of the former US president etched into the glass of the bottle was more than enough to make this bottle popular among all wine enthusiasts, as well as history buffs.
4. Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1951
The relatively new wine has fetched over $50,000 at an auction, making it the most expensive Australian wine to be sold at an auction. It is also one of the most expensive wines in the world. The wine, which is a combination of Shiraz with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, has an extraordinary blend of flavors.
Even without taking the auction into consideration, a bottle of this wine is among the most expensive wines in the world. Priced at around $38,420, it’s one of the finest Australian wines. However, the chances of getting your hands on this bottle appear rather bleak since there are only 20 bottles in existence.
5. Cheval Blanc 1947
This is probably the only wine on this list which is not scarce in nature as 110,000 bottles of the wine come from Bordeaux, France in 1947, and a few of them are still available. While there are different claims for its exact price, there is no difference in opinion when it comes to the flavors that this wine has to offer.
The texture and flavors of the wine make it one of the finest wines. The wine has everything working in its favor. The 50:50 Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend gives the wine a unique and memorable taste. The wine has perfect texture which is a treat for the palate and is to be one of the most extraordinary liquors.
Not everyone can shell out this kind of money on a bottle of wine. There are hundreds of exquisite wines available in the market that will give you every bit as much satisfaction as the exorbitantly priced wines listed above.
If your preference is the famous Cabernet Sauvignon, I can assure you with so many wine brands available you can surely find the one made perfectly for you.
