However, it was only in 2000 that the wine smashed all records and fetched a whopping $500,000 at the Napa Valley Wine Auction. Surprisingly enough, the wine that left the entire world in awe was not even a decade old at the time that of purchase – debunking the whole concept that older wines are more exquisite.
Even though the price would reduced a bit as the sale was a part of a charity auction, the bottle costs more than any other wine in history.
2. Chateau Margaux 1787
Costing almost $200,000 less than the first wine on this list, the Chateau Margaux was also originally valued at $500,000 by its owner – William Sokolin. The wine is famous for being the most expensive wine that was never sold because a waiter knocked it over and broke the bottle before any sale could take place.
As a result, insurers settled for $225,000, earning the wine a rather decent sum, considering the unfortunate end that it met with.
3. Château Lafite 1787
The age and the reputation of belonging to Thomas Jefferson’s cellar were enough to make any wine as expensive as this one, i.e. $156,450. During his time in France, Jefferson spent a lot of time in the vineyards of Burgundy and Bordeaux; from where he brought back this exquisite bottle of wine.
Finding the initials of the former US president etched into the glass of the bottle was more than enough to make this bottle popular among all wine enthusiasts, as well as history buffs.
4. Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1951
The relatively new wine has fetched over $50,000 at an auction, making it the most expensive Australian wine to be sold at an auction. It is also one of the most expensive wines in the world. The wine, which is a combination of Shiraz with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, has an extraordinary blend of flavors.
Even without taking the auction into consideration, a bottle of this wine is among the most expensive wines in the world. Priced at around $38,420, it’s one of the finest Australian wines. However, the chances of getting your hands on this bottle appear rather bleak since there are only 20 bottles in existence.
5. Cheval Blanc 1947
This is probably the only wine on this list which is not scarce in nature as 110,000 bottles of the wine come from Bordeaux, France in 1947, and a few of them are still available. While there are different claims for its exact price, there is no difference in opinion when it comes to the flavors that this wine has to offer.
The texture and flavors of the wine make it one of the finest wines. The wine has everything working in its favor.
