Have you ever woken up one morning, and thought: “today is the day to rejuvenate my skin”?

Well, I did a couple of weeks ago, when I realised that the day had come to start rejuvenating my skin.

Since I am in mid-life, it doesn’t surprise me when now and then someone calls me “Tannie” (the polite word for an old lady). Or, asks me how many Grandchildren I have. And, although these questions took me by surprise when they began, I have taken them in my stride.

But, the final straw came when a lovely lady at the airport told me that I look just like Judi Dench. After seeing my face drop, she proceeded to tell me that Judi is so beautiful, and her favourite Actress etc etc etc. While I know I should have taken this as a compliment, it felt otherwise. Thoughts flooded me, as to how in my mid 50 s it is possible to look like someone in her 80s’. She did clarify by saying that I looked like a young version of Judi. But, alas, the wake up had begun!

That was my turning point, and I went in search of anti-ageing techniques. I am terrified of hospitals and operations, so plastic surgery was not an option, just yet! I did a lot of research, and through Skin Renewal found several non-invasive Anti-Aging alternatives.

Skin Renewal

From the moment I walked into Skin Renewal at Stellenbosch, I knew I was in the right hands. Everything is fresh, including the lovely aroma, the inviting lemon water, and of course the Therapists and Staff. Plus, they all have perfect skin, just saying. Dr Graham gave me an in-depth consultation and advised me as to what Anti-aging treatments would be ideal for rejuvenating my skin.

And so my journey began. Skin Renewal suggested that I have a combination of injectables and treatments. Most of the treatments sounded like double dutch to me, although I have since read up about them and have done some research, and all of the results are incredible.

It has been a few weeks now since I took the plunge, and I am delighted with my results so far. I was beyond excited for my 1st treatment and fully prepared. Both the Doctor and the Therapists gave me in-depth info on what to do and not to do, to enhance the results.

I must say that since I began this anti-ageing journey, I have become far more aware of my health. I have been drinking lots of water, eating healthily and sticking to a regular skincare regime. The bonus of this is that without dieting, I have even lost a couple of kgs.

My journey began with injectables, Botox, and Fillers. As always, I was welcomed by friendly, smiles, and shown to what I thought would be my “torture” bed. It was, in fact, reasonably painless, and it was amazing to see the instant results of the fillers. Before beginning, I had before photos taken, and when I have my after pics taken in a few months, I will share them with you. I am going to give you a very brief info on the difference between Botox and Fillers.

Dynamic vs. Static Wrinkles

Skin Renewal

Yes, Dynamcis Wrinkles are those lines that appear when your face is animated, such as when you smile, frown or laugh. I suggest doing Botulinum Toxin injections for these types of wrinkles. It relaxes the facial muscles, softening the wrinkles and lines that occur from progressive facial movements. Static wrinkles are facial lines that are evident even when our face is resting. These are due to volume loss and better treated with dermal fillers.

As we age, our facial dynamics change. The depressors take over and combined with gravity, a gradual sagging of our brow and jawline takes place. The aim is to keep the dynamics between elevators and depressors neutral. This is achieved by strategically placed Botulinum Toxin injections. Best to be repeated every 4 to 6 months, and resulting in the sagging that occurs with ageing being reduced.

Fillers are used for enhancing and restoring lost facial volume to areas such as your cheeks, chin and jawline. Restylane Volume restores and adds support to the skin’s structure giving a smoother, fuller and more youthful appearance. The FDA has approved Restylane® Lyft for cheek augmentation, and the correction of age-related midface contour deficiencies in patients. This is in addition to treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (smile lines).

And so my journey continues, and we will share more about other anti-aging treatments and therapies that are available other than injectibles. Although I would highly recommend that if your budget allows, that you do a combination of both, as I am doing. Remember to watch this space!
