Yeah right! Relationship with food? Oh… yes! Healthy food is not the enemy. And, if you build a good relationship with it and love it, you’ll be super-healthy.

You see, love has a lot to do with the food choices you make, including your eating patterns. If you train your palate to appreciate and love healthy foods, you can be well on your way to not only vibrant health but a slim figure too!

So, if you’re ready to get started, then here are three tips to get hooked on healthy food…

1. To appreciate your food, you have to taste it

No more multi-tasking while you eat. No phone, TV, books, magazines while you eat. How can you appreciate your food when you want to quickly eat while driving before the traffic lights turn green?

When you focus on tasting your food, it affects your ability to control how much you eat. This is known as sensory-specific satiety. You see, this reflex connects taste appreciation to hunger drives. Therefore, take your time to taste your food. Leave it on your palate, and allow this neural mechanism to reduce your drive to eat the food. Also, try not to stuff your mouth because your taste buds are on the surface of your tongue won’t taste it. You then end up bypassing the neural mechanism and end up eating way more than you should.

2.  Savour every mouthful and eat slowly

Sometimes, especially when you work or have a baby,  you have limited time to enjoy your meal. You wolf down your meal as quickly as possible so you an get moving. I get it. However, when you turn eating into a chore and forget to savour every bit, it becomes a big problem!

You see, it takes approximately 20 minutes for the “full” signal to get from your digestive system to your brain. In fact, hormones such as cholecystokinin take a bit longer to move up into your brain regions therefore, delaying the sensation of fullness. You then become physiologically full long before achieving psychological fullness. The result? Overeating and under-appreciating your food. So, if you want to love your food, you have to eat slowly… there’s no rush!

3. Try to choose quality over quantity

If you want to love and appreciate your food, you’ll have to start making higher quality, healthier food choices. If you eat usually eat vegetables, fruits, seeds, nuts… and limit, or eliminate alcohol, processed foods and breads, your body speak to you. After a while, it will start to recognize foods it really enjoys and foods it absolutely hates. And, I can assure you, it won’t be junk. It will be real real, natural foods that don’t contain any synthetic ingredients. Your taste buds are quickly trained so that the junk foods you used to crave all the time aren’t nearly as desirable as they once were!
