According to a study published in the Arthritis & Rheumatism journal, eating cherries for two days can lowered your risk of gout by 35%. Yes, they can! This is because cherries have a high level of antioxidants that help lower inflammation. However, it’s not only your inflammation that they lower. Cherries are different from other fruits that also have high levels of antioxidants because they also lower the levels of uric acid in your body.

So, what quantities of cherries should you eat?

Well, it’s not even a large amount you need to eat to reap the benefits! Yuqing Zhang, Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University, lead author of the study, said you only need to eat about half a cup of cherries for two days to reduce your risk of gout by 35%. That’s only 10 to 12 cherries a day! The professor further explained a way that you can lower your risk even more! When you take medications to lower uric acid levels and eat cherries, you can decrease in your risk by as much as 75%.

So, if you do have high uric acid levels and suffer from the painful symptoms of gout, chat to your doctor about the medications available to you. And, don’t forget to eat cherries every day to help lower your symptoms.
