With the festive season around the corner, it’s just inevitable that you’re going to be surrounded by lots of delicious and mostly unhealthy food. And, turning down your favourite sweet treats and yummy foods just isn’t an option, right?
Well, if you can’t steer clear of unhealthy foods and are left feeling bloated and uncomfortable after overindulging, I’ve put together five de-bloat tips that could help you!
1. Try ginger
Ginger especially fresh is fantastic for soothing your stomach. If the taste is too strong for you, try grating some into a glass of hot water with some freshly squeezed lemon or honey to dilute the taste a little. I prefer to add mine to juices and smoothies!
2. Stay away from salt
Consuming too many foods high in salt can leave you feeling uncomfortable and bloated. This is because salt causes your body to hold on to excess water thus, giving you that puffy, bloated feeling. The best way to de-bloat is too steer clear of foods high in salt, and give your body a chance to let go of all that excess water.
3. Pop a probiotic
Probiotics work wonders by restoring the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut. If you don’t want to take supplements, you can find them in foods such as kimchi, natural yoghurt, sauerkraut and other pickled foods.
4. Add some asparagus
Asparagus is packed with potassium, which helps regulate the fluid balance in your body. Furthermore, it counteracts all of the salt you may have consumed that left you feeling bloated. So, chop some up and saute with a little olive oil or add it to your breakfast omelette!
5. Drink lots of water
Drinking things such as soft drinks can make your digestive issues worse. So, drink lots of water to help restore balance in your body, which is exactly what you need after eating fatty and sugary foods. The best way to remember to keep your fluids up is by keeping a drink bottle with you at all times.
Additional tip: Don’t skip meals when you’re bloated as this will only cause your blood sugar to drop and make you irritable, and may even cause you to overeat later that day. Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself and feel guilty if you have overindulged. After all, it’s that time of the year!
