No one likes being in a crowded, stale-smelling room. Now, image a stuffy yoga room – not inspiring at all. That’s why yoga is moving to wherever you want to do it. Practicing in the great outdoors is exhilarating. You don’t have to fight for space, or poke the lady next to you as you perfect your warrior pose. Outdoors you can try out more advanced poses without the worry of wobbling into your neighbour.

Here’s why you should take your yoga outside:

It strengthens your skill and muscles for balance

I struggle with balance or balance postures, then the outdoors will help you. Nothing is stable outside. There’s no perfect spot or wooden floors. So, you have no choice but to keep trying and eventually you master balancing outside. This will also improved your balance at home.

It increases your inner proprioception skills

Proprioception is the ability to sense stimuli arising within the body regarding position, motion, and equilibrium. Even if you’re blindfolded, you will knows through proprioception if an arm is above the head or hanging by the side of the body. With this skill, you can make an adjustment in a backbend or inversion safely and get deeper into the pose. When you’re outside with all of the activity, it’s difficult to focus. But as time goes by, you will acquire this skill.

It helps you develop inner strength and stability

I am really guilty of this: I often desire to do my meditation and asana inside in a quiet and controlled environment. If it’s too cool, I put on the heat. If it’s too loud, I close a door. If my mind is too crazy, I put on some music for asana. None of this is possible outdoors. One learns to “welcome” the breeze as one is practicing, which means that you may not sweat so much. But, when you can “welcome” those outer elements, you become stronger and more stable in all aspects of our life. There is less requiring things to be a certain way and more acceptance for things as they are at this moment.

It helps you reconnect with Nature

It is just amazing for your skin, your inner glow, and connecting to the greatest of living things, our planet. The bugs, annoying noises, messes, rain, and some changing temperatures are all part of the living entity that is Earth. In balance you’ll also have some of the most amazing sunsets, gorgeous views of turquoise, greens, blues and whites blending into each other, and the fresh feeling of being in Paradise.

For an enjoyable yoga experience outside, ensure you have these few essential elements:

  • Yoga mat
  • Natural sunscreen
  • Bottle of water
  • Two hand towels: One to put over your eyes and another to help you open up your poses or to sit on for meditation.
  • A picnic blanket or full-size towel. Place this under your yoga mat to keep it from getting sandy or soggy.

When you practice yoga outdoors, you won’t just be glowing from the inside, you’ll get a tan at the same time. Now that’s multitasking.
