If you’ve tried to use homemade baking soda mixtures to scrub the grime off your pots and pans, you probably know how gritty the concoction is.

What I love about it is, how it absorbs stains, especially greasy stains. Baking Soda or Bicarbonate of Soda is the first alternative people who stop using shampoo turn to. This is because it effectively turns the glorious protective sebum of your hair (what makes it looks greasey) into soap. You can even feel a slipperiness all over your hair sometimes called saponification (soaping up!) in process.

Why you should use baking soda for your hair

A successful baking soda wash will firstly leaves your hair feeling squeaky clean as you rinse it off. Furthermore, it also leaves your hair shiny, bright and light. And with time, as your hair gets more used to it, it will become less greasy. But, these are not the only benefits of using baking soda for your hair, it :

  • is sodium laurel sulfate, paraben, dye, DEA/Diethanolamine and fragrance-free
  • contains a single, all-natural ingredient (sodium bicarbonate)
  • is cheaper than any commercial shampoo on the market
  • doesn’t create build up
  • helps to treat and prevent dandruff

Baking soda hair recipes

If you want to see how baking soda affects your hair, try one of these amazing DIY recipes. Just remember not to use it all the time. You can use 1/4 to 1 tspn for one wash and then use an alternative for your next wash. An alternative should be something with incredibly nourishing elements like an egg.

1. Baking soda shampoo

Baking soda shampoo works best when mixed right before you use it. Mix together one part baking soda with three to four parts water to form a paste (experiment to see what works best for you). Scrub the paste into your hair and scalp and leave it in for a minute or two; then, rinse clean off thoroughly. Finish with a vinegar rinse.

2. Baking soda conditioner

Ingredients:
• ½ cup baking soda
• 1 cup of your favorite conditioner (To adjust the pH of baking soda)

What to do:
Mix thoroughly and smooth onto hair. let sit with shower cap for 15-20 minutes. Rinse.
