You don’t have to be a boxer or rugby player to have a tooth knocked out. You could lose it in an accident any day. And the last thing you want is to regret not knowing how you should have saved the tooth. Your chances of keeping your tooth are usually better when you get to a dentist within 30 minutes. In reality, that isn’t possible. So here’s what you need to do if this happens to you.
Put the tooth back where it belongs
It doesn’t matter where you are. You can increase the odds of success by transporting the tooth to the dentist in its own socket. Hold it by the crown and don’t touch the roots. Rinse it with salt water or just plain water and gently put it back in its socket. Living cells and tiny, fragile ligament shreds cling to the root of the tooth. And, if it doesn’t stay in place, hold it inside the mouth.
DON’T put your child’s tooth in your mouth
This is if you’re worried that your child will swallow it. Instead, have the child spit into a cup. Place the tooth in the cup with the saliva. If nothing else is available, place the tooth in a cup of water. The most important thing is to keep the tooth moist. You cannot save baby(primary) teeth.
Transport your tooth in cold milk
If the tooth has fallen and is dirty, or putting the tooth in your mouth disturbs you, then you can try this option. It’s not the best solution but milk’s chemical makeup helps preserve the tooth. Also, the temperature retards the growth of bacteria.
Remember to get to the dentist as quickly as possible.
