I’m sure you’ve heard people with arthritis tell you they know the weather is about to turn because of the pain in their joints. My granny always did and also complained about her joints when it was cold outside.

But what is it about the cold weather that causes joint pain?

It’s not your imagination: Your joints do get more painful as winter gets closer

“Changes in barometric pressure sometimes causes some people – especially those with arthritis – to have increased pain in their joints,”webMD explains. Experts believe it’s because of how a change in barometric pressure affects joint pressure. Barometric pressure refers to the weight of the atmosphere that surrounds us. Let me explain how it affects your joints:

Imagine the tissues surrounding your joints as balloon. Barometric pressure is pushed against the body from the outside when it is high and stops your tissues from expanding. And, when it drops, just before bad weather sets in, lower air pressure pushes less against the body. This then causes your tissues to expand, putting pressure on your joints and causing pain. but, you don’t have to put up with the pain. Here’s what you can do…

Three ways to keep joint pain at bay as the weather grows colder

1. Add fish oil to your diet

Numerous studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the level of inflammation in your joints. So, take 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams a day to get the benefits.

2. Warm water works wonders on aching joints

Whether sitting in a bath or swimming in a heated pool, you’ll find relief for your joints in the warm water. However, be warned: You can’t just soak, try to carry on with your day. Also, you need to let your body temperature normalise first before you go out in the cold otherwise, your efforts will have been for nothing.

3. Supplement with vitamin D

A vitamin D deficiency can make your joint pain worse. And, since you’re less likely to spend as much time outdoors in the sun when it’s cold, taking a supplement to get enough vitamin D when it gets colder is essential.

A massages can also help ease sore joints and muscles. So, do indulge yourself.
