Yoga in the outdoors. What a wonderful learning curve it has been for all of us, who have become used to the comforts of a studio space. It’s almost impossible not to relate the obstacles (and rewards) we face in outdoor yoga classes to those we find in our daily lives.

Pouncing through the challenges

The wind – a constant force attempting to knock us off our mats, off our life path. And yet we stand, steady as a forest in our tree-poses, letting the wind move around us. Affirming that although we might be swayed, we are strong. We will get back up if the wind knocks us over.

The bugs – oh my, the all-too-eager bugs. These little critters seem to be attracted to the array of yoga mats on display during a yoga class, seemingly oblivious to the humans trying to practice yoga on top of these mats. As annoying (and occasionally slightly scary) as these creatures may be, we learn to practice alongside them. Maybe gently moving one or two off a potential foot-planting danger zone, remembering ahimsa; non-violence.

The rain – picture this: a dark morning, fields drenched in water after an evening of rain, and a steady downpour. 6:00 outdoor yoga? No, thank you. Warm bed? Yes, please. Yet somehow yogis showed up bundled in their warm clothes, ready for their weekly morning class. And what a class it was, with the rain serving as rhythmic background noise. Sometimes beauty comes from the most unexpected sources.

Finally, the sunset and sunrise. My personal favourite reward from practicing yoga in the great outdoors. How can a day be anything but astoundingly wonderful when greeted through yoga in the presence of a beautifully soft rising sun? How can a day not end well stretching gently under the warm glow of a setting sun? There is so much beauty in the world, embrace it at every chance you get.

Weekly Events

We have three exciting events happening this weekend, on top of our normal classes! Our Yoga & Wine evenings are back on Friday evening at 18:00, where we enjoy a gentle hatha yoga class to wind down after a busy week, and then move on to enjoy a cheese platter and wine served in beautiful Zen gardens. It’s all about finding your balance.

On Saturday morning at 7:00, Fran Siebrits will guide us through a beautiful Budokon and yoga sequence inspired by the four elements. We invite you to find your center through mindfully moving between North, East, South and West, finding harmony in the body and mind. Budokon means ‘the way of the spiritual warrior’ and is a combination of yoga, martial arts, and meditation.

On Sunday morning at 9;00, we have Tara, our kiddies Angel to entertain our children.  We would love you to join us for our 9;00am Yoga class, but feel free to drop the kiddies off while you go off for a peaceful Sunday breakfast at the market.

Class Announcements

We’re excited to announce another class to our weekly timetable at Lourensford! Eugene Vogel will be guiding us through a Vinyasa flow on Monday evenings from 18:00 – 19:00. If you’re looking for a bit of a sweat in your yoga class, this one is for you. Beginners, don’t shy away! Eugene is a wonderful teacher to yogis of all levels.

We’re also excited to announce another amazing teacher to our team – James Prain, who guides us through Power Yoga on a Thursday afternoon from 17:30 – 18:30. His ultimate intention is to empower each practitioner with a suitable means through which they complement their daily lives, to work more intelligently with their equipment for living, and to holistically move in the direction of sustainable well-being.

Due to the summer heat, we have decided to start our Sunday classes at 8:30, ending at 10:00. Bring the kids along for a yoga and sound journey with Tara, while you enjoy a rejuvenating yoga class with Ryan.
