For example, do you hear yourself saying ‘I’m sorry if I’m taking up your valuable time, but…’, or something similar when approaching someone? This is a gentle way of starting a conversation, but can make you sound nervous. Use ‘Excuse me…’ instead. Even better, don’t rephrase, just omit it altogether – by doing so, you’ve already begun to assume a more assertive manner.
