Going bald is inevitable for most men. After all, if your dad is bald, there’s a high chance you start losing hair later in life. However, don’t blame your father! Studies show that you can inherit the ‘baldness’ gene from your mother.
And while there’s really nothing you can do to stop this from happening, you can definitely slow it down by changing your diet…
Foods that encourage baldness
1. Processed foods and sweets
Processed foods and sweets made with refined flour like white bread, are loaded with hidden sugar, which can cause your blood sugar levels to rise, triggering a surge of insulin. As a result, your body releases more androgens, a hormone that can cause your hair follicles to shrink and lead to hair loss.
2. Too much animal protein
Diets high in protein may be great for your waistline, but are not good for your hair. Protein is key to building strong, healthy strands. However, if you’re overdoing it, it will be the expense of other nutrients. So, replace some animal protein in your diet with higher fibre, plant-based protein instead. This will give you a wider variety of nutrients, which is essential to your overall health and hair health.
3. Fish high in mercury
Fish is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent baldness and speed up hair growth. Just ensure you stay away from high-mercury seafood like wordfish, which can lead to hair loss. Eat healthier choices such as light tuna, salmon, and halibut, which is also a great source of magnesium.
4. Foods high in saturated fats
Foods that are high in saturated fats, like crackers, margarine and baked goods, can clog your pores – even on your scalp – which often leads to hair loss. The same goes for foods high in hydrogenated oils. Therefore, make sure you avoid them if you don’t want to go bald.
