Not only is honey very pleasant on the tongue, but it’s a very potent medicine, too. However, not all honey is the same. If you’ve heard of Manuka honey, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.
So, what makes this honey different and why is it so popular in healing and wellness? Well, as much as it’s trendy, there’s some solid science behind it…
In a study conducted at Sydney University’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences, manuka honey killed all types of bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant “superbugs.” Made in New Zealand and Australia by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, the honey has more antibacterial activity than any other honey. It’s also loaded with a compound called methylglyoxal, which is responsible for its antibacterial powers. Here’s how you can take advantage of these benefits for your skin and teeth.
How to use Manuka honey for your skin
1. Face wash
Wash your face with the honey at least once a week. All you have to do is use a teaspoon of the honey after washing your face and neck and massage it using your hands. Your skin must be wet. Then, wipe the honey off using a wet cloth.
2. Face mask
For dull or very dry skin, apply two teaspoons of the honey as a face mask. Ensure that your skin is freshly cleaned when you apply the mask and leave it on for not less than 20 minutes. Wipe the honey off and rinse your skin. Manuka honey is so intensely hydrating, therefore, you don’t even need to moisturise!
3. Lip treatment
If you’re lips are cracked, dab some raw Manuka honey to help your lips to heal. You can apply it before bedtime. However, try not to lick it off and allow your lips to absorb it overnight. If your mouth has cracks at the corners, a Q-tip with tea tree oil at one end and the honey at the other end works like a magic wand. Dab the tea tree oil first onto the crack and then follow with the honey.
How to use Manuka honey for whiter teeth
1. Mouthwash
Manuka honey is packed with potent antibacterial properties and penetrates biofilms. Therefore, you can use it with a little bit of warm water as a mouthwash to help freshen your breath and overall improve your dental health. This method is especially beneficial if you have periodontal disease.
2. Oil pulling
Oil pulling is also for fresher breath and whiter teeth. For better results, mix Manuka honey with coconut oil. Your dentist will definitely see the difference on your next visit!
The benefits of Manuka honey don’t end here. You can apply topically to the skin for bites, skin infections and cuts. You can also swallow a teaspoonful of the honey when you feel a sore throat coming on. Furthermore, eating about 1 Tablespoon of the honey per day can help soothe other digestive problems and eliminate acid reflux.
