Because type 1 diabetes isn’t hereditary, most children who get it, don’t have another family member with it. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed between the ages of 10-13.

At this point, there’s nothing you or your child can do to prevent it. Type 1 diabetes is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the pancreas that results in a lack of insulin. Therefore, it’s important that you seek medical help if you suspect your child is diabetic.

The warning signs of insuline deficiency in children

 1. Extreme thirst: Your child will always be thirsty.
2. Frequent urination: He’ll take lots of trips to urinate.
3. Constant hunger: He wants to eat all the time.
4. Weight loss: Your child eats but their body breaks down fat for energy.
5. Weakened eyesight: Your child strains to see the board at school.

If you notice any of these signs in your child, don’t hesitate to take them for a check up. Get to a Dischem clinic or a doctor for a glucose test. If you leave him and his body starts to breakdown fat because of an insulin deficiency – a process known as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) – his body will produce by-products called ketones.

Look out for the signs of DKA in your child as he/she’ll need urgent medical attention. DKA causes vomiting, fast breathing, a fruity breath smell, fatigue, a flushed face and stomach pain. This is a medical emergency so rush your child to the hospital if he/she shows these signs of type 1 diabetes.
