Whether you’re learning the art of extreme couponing, browsing the latest second hand cars for sale, or buying people’s birthday presents in the sales months in advance, everyone’s looking to save money where they can. Styling your home is no different; there are plenty of ways that you can make your home look beautiful, whilst keeping a tight rein on your purse strings. Here are just a handful to get you started…
Change your colours
The easiest, cheapest and quickest way to bring a whole new vibe into your space is to change the colours. Of course, the colour you choose all depends on the room itself and the mood you’re trying to create. For example, if you want to make a room feel brighter and more spacious, white is always a popular choice, but sometimes it can seem a little harsh, in which case a soft grey colour is a good alternative. If it’s your living room, go for calming colours like pale blues and creams to help you relax at the end of the day.
Work with what you have
Now that you have your new colour scheme in place, think of how you could better use the furniture in your room. For example, if you have a cream sofa that seems a bit dull, pick up that new colour with some plump, modern cushions with funky patterns, and add a more contemporary coffee table. This is your chance to rearrange the furniture to work more practically for you too, so think about the lighting, the positioning of shelving units and so on.
Upcycling
The “make do and mend” trend has been growing in popularity over the past 10 years, and it’s at its peak where furniture is concerned. If you’ve come across an old unit that simply won’t work well in your new space, can you give it a new lease of life? There are plenty of upcycling workshops around, not to mention hundreds of Youtube videos on how to get your desired effect. If it’s a tatty dining table that’s too traditional, try stripping it back along with the chairs, re-painting them white or grey, and re-upholstering them to match your new décor.
Make more of your walls
Wall art doesn’t just have to mean hanging a painting anymore. If you want to create a lavish bedroom, try going for an over-sized ornate mirror that rests on the floor for that true ballroom look. If it’s your living room and you want to put up family pictures, but in a more fashionable way, try putting up lengths of string in a checked box shape, and use clips or miniature coloured pegs to attach family photos. You can change it regularly, it costs next to nothing to create, and it will be a real feature for that room.
