It’s totally understandable why you keep putting off taking your itchy, allergic dog to the doctor because of the high vet bills – not to mention all the costly allergy medications your vet prescribes.

However, your dogs constant scratching can lead to hair loss and skin infections. And, as a loving pet parent, you don’t want to see your pooch suffer. So, here are four great natural remedies for dog itching, allergies and dehydrated skin to make your pup happy and healthy again.

1. Give baths with a gentle or medicated shampoo

Baths help to control the amount of allergens on your dog’s skin, as long as you avoid anything that will irritate or dry out their skin. You could also take your dog to the groomers. It not only makes them look cute and clean, but also works wonders for the delicate skin beneath their thick coats too. By cleaning them regularly and untangling their fur, any chance of skin irritation is greatly reduced. You don’t have to take your dog to a professional groomer all the time, because you can give your dog a thorough brush and bath them once every ten days or so at home.

2. Treat Dry Skin with Vitamin E

Vitamin E is great for preventing those pesky age lines on your face, and it’s also great for your dog’s dry skin. All you have to do is give your pet a doggy massage by applying vitamin E oil directly to the skin. You can also give a soaking bath with vitamin E added to the water, or you can go give your dog a vitamin E pill. However, if you give the vitamin orally, check with your vet on the recommended dosage for your specific dog breed.

3. Protect Them From The Sun

Just like us, sunlight is harmful for dogs. They don’t only get sunburned, but can in extreme cases develop cancer. Therefore, as hard as it is, try to keep your dog safe from the sun’s deadly rays. Simply put an old t-shirt on your dog or apply some pet-friendly sunscreen.

4. Try the new Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™

With new Hill’s™ Prescription Diet™ Derm Defense™, soothing the itch could be as simple as serving your dog his dinner. This is Hill’s first clinical nutrition that reduces signs of environmental allergies by disrupting the internal allergy response and creating a barrier against future episodes.

“Derm Defense’s formulation helps block environmental allergens, ideally before they trigger a reaction,” said Dr Guy Fyvie, Veterinary Advisor to Hill’s South Africa. “Formulated with the HistaGuard™ Complex, a proprietary blend of antioxidants, egg, and phytonutrients containing quercetin, it helps decrease the release of histamine and inflammatory cytokines that cause itching. The ability to help interrupt this reaction using nutrition is remarkable, helping drive healthy skin from within.”
