Social media use in South Africa is exploding, with winners and losers in the space.
According to World Wide Worx and Fuseware’s South African Social Media Landscape 2016 study, a quarter of all South Africans – 13 million people – now use Facebook.
Ten million of these users access Facebook via mobile devices while 1.6 million are using basic feature phones to browse the social network.
The study further says that 1.4 million South Africans access Facebook via their tablets
Meanwhile, picture-sharing service Instagram has also recorded strong growth in South Africa, according to the study.
Instagram doubled its user base from 1.1 million in 2014 to 2.68 mlllion in 2015.
Other major social networks such as LinkedIn recorded growth while Mxit shrank in terms of monthly active users.

2013: 680,000
2014: 1.1 million
2015: 2.68 million

It looks like it’s on the up and up for now. The increases are still higher each year so we will see: maybe in 5 years or until the next big social media platform takes off.
