Bread – call it sacred food. Some religions use it. Restaurants always keep it stocked on the dinning table. And, many households serve it with every meal. Bread supplies about 20 percent of the total food calories worldwide. But there’s one thing most people don’t understand: Grains are NOT all the same.

So, if you’re thinking of eliminating carbs from your diet, cutting out bread is sure to have serious effects on your body. These effects can vary largely from person to person, but there are a few that everyone who’s jumped on the low-carb bandwagon will experience.

Four things that happen when you drop bread

1. You lose weight

You start to burn fat – immediately. But don’t be fooled because this is not fat. It’s water weight. According to dietician and strength coach Marie Spano, when your body stores carbs in the form of glycogen, each gram of carbohydrate stores three to four times it weight in water. Try to exercise in the morning before you have breakfast. This will force your body to burn stored fat and not the food you’ve eaten earlier in the day.

2. Your junk cravings stop

Unfortunately, calories don’t satiate your hunger. The nutrients ie fiber, protein and healthy fats do that. Refined carbs , on the other hand, are well-known for spiking your blood sugar levels, only for them to crash back down again. They fill you up quickly but still send you back on a food hunt. Try to choose fibre-rich whole grains over refined carbs. This will help you curb your cravings. But, there’s a side effect to this benefit – you get cranky!

3. You get seriously moody

Carbs, whether whole or refined, help increase serotonin. This is the feel good neurotransmitter in the brain. So when you stop consuming healthy carbs like whole grains, your mental health goes right along with it – how interesting is that?

4. You feel sluggish

Whole grains are packed with magnesium, iron and B vitamins. These are all essential for optimal energy levels. So, this is kind of scary when you think about how a large number of our population is severely deficient in magnesium! Furthermore, since carbs are your body’s favourite source of fuel, all of your cells slow down. Thus, resulting in lower energy levels, when you stop eating a healthy supply.

So you decide. Will it be low-carb or not to low-carb?
