Mother Nature offers an abundance of ingredients for beauty products. Therefore, you don’t have to spend thousands of rands on the usual expensive, chemically infused products.
Instead, give these ten fabulous all-natural at-home beauty treatments a go.
1. Cucumber aromatherapy
Place pieces of cucumber into a boiling pot of water. The nutrients from the cucumber react with the boiling water and release in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma.
2. Green tea eye reviver
Prepare a cup of green tea and let it cool. Soak two cotton balls in the tea and squeeze out any excess liquid. After cleansing, place the cotton balls on each of your eyes for 15 minutes.
3. Yoghurt cleanser
Mix 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon plain Greek yoghurt and ½ a teaspoon lemon oil (not lemon juice!). Massage the mixture over your skin (avoiding the eyes), then wipe it off immediately with a warm wet cloth.
4. Oatmeal exfoliator
Cook some plain oatmeal using minimal water so it forms a thick paste. Then, combine 1 teaspoon olive oil with 1 teaspoon honey into the cooked oatmeal. Allow to cool, and apply as a scrub, gently rubbing it in small circles over your skin (avoiding the eye area). Rinse off with warm water.
5. Hydrating fennel face mask (for dry skin)
Blend 1 tablespoon oatmeal and set aside. Make a tea by adding 1 tablespoon fennel seeds to ½ cup boiling water. Seep for 10 minutes then strain the seeds and discard them. Once cooled, mix the tea with the ground oatmeal and 1 tablespoon of honey and apply to your face after cleansing. After 20 minutes, rinse with warm water, then again with cold water.
6. Tightening lemon face mask (for blemished or blotchy skin)
Mix 2 tablespoons plain Greek yoghurt and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. After cleansing, apply the mixture to your face and neck (avoiding the eye area). Leave to dry for 20 to 30 minutes (it will tighten on your face and neck), rinse with warm water, then again with cold water.
7. Yoghurt hair mask
Massage ½ cup Greek yoghurt into damp hair. After 20 minutes, rinse with warm water, then again with cold water, then shampoo and condition hair as usual.
8. Hydrating olive oil hair mask (for dry hair)
Massage ½ cup honey with 2 tablespoons olive oil into clean, damp hair. Leave in for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
9. Raw egg hair mask
Normal hair — use ½ cup whisked eggs
Oily hair — use ½ cup of whisked egg whites
Dry hair — use ½ cup whisked egg yolks
Apply to clean, damp hair. After 20 minutes rinse with cold water (hot water — it will cook the egg), then shampoo and condition hair as per normal.
10. Peppermint foot soak
Mix 1/2 cup Epsom salt, the zest of one lime and 3 drops of peppermint essential oil in warm water. Then sit back, relax and enjoy!
Note: Always remember to do a quick patch test before applying anything yourself. Test on sensitive skin, like the inside of your wrist, to make sure you don’t have a bad reaction to any ingredients.
