Eating too much processed food can affect your brain and lead to the symptoms of depression. In fact, mounting evidence shows that dietary deficiencies can sometimes cause depression and even schizophrenia.
An Italian study revealed that almost all of the 331 depressed people taking part in the test had extremely low levels of cholesterol in their body. Evidence shows that very low-fat diets can cause depression. And insufficient levels of B vitamins, high intakes of sugar and caffeine, and gluten or milk allergies have all been shown to cause or aggravate mental illness too. Your doctor may not tell you that other common triggers for depression include some prescription drugs such as antihistamines, antibiotics, drugs for high blood pressure, nasal decongestants and heart drugs.
The last thing you want to deal with when you’re suffering from depression is an episode of ill health. But that’s exactly what you can experience with many common depression drugs.
Tricyclic antidepressants can cause delirium, fatigue, excessive sweating, dangerously low blood pressure, and even strokes and heart attacks. Prozac has brought on vomiting, diarrhoea, anxiety, insomnia, sexual problems,
muscle, bone, ear and eye pain and even suicide in some people.
Eat a healthier food by using a fork and knife
If you think about all foods you’re likely to eat with a fork and knife, you’ll probably imagine a healthy plate filled with protein, vegetables and other carbohydrates. Basically, you’ll imagine sitting at a table, right? Therefore, with this logic in mind, to make it easier for you to cut back on processed foods and take better care of your mental health, try to use a fork every time you eat. You won’t be using a fork to eat muffins, doughnuts, sweets, cakes…
If you can always think about eating with a fork, you’ll definitely consider eating healthier foods. Think salads, quinoa, vegetables, avos, rice and cous cous… And, while you eat healthy, you take charge of your mental health and lose weight too!
