Cold sores like to strike when they’re least welcome – just before a special occasion. And, if you’ve suffered a cold sore breakout, you know the symptoms all too well.

Those painful, itchy, blistery bumps are just as annoying as that unwanted guest who just keep coming back.

Caused by the herpes simplex and affecting as many as 40% of us, it’s safe to say that cold sores are a fact of life. But there are a few effective remedies that can help get rid of them. Here are six.

Six tips for effectively treating cold sores

1. Liquorice extract

Mix ¼ to ½ teaspoon of petroleum jelly or Vaseline with one tablespoon of liquorice extract. Then, apply a thin layer to the affected area for immediate relief as well as quick recovery!

2. DIY cold sore treatment

Soak a cotton swab in 100% pure vanilla extract. This is naturally anti-viral. Then, simply dab and hold onto the affected area for a minute. Try to repeat this process three to four times daily until the cold sore is gone.

3. Don’t touch!

As tempting as it is, you shouldn’t touch or pick a cold sore. Touching it dries it out and triggers a bacterial infection.

4. Sleep upright

When you elevate your head, it helps the cold sore blisters drain so that the fluid doesn’t settle overnight. All you have to do is use extra pillows.

5. Apply ice

When you apply an ice pack to a cold sore, it instantly numbs the area thereby reducing pain and swelling.

6. Take small bites

Try not to open your mouth too wide when you’re eating because this aggravates the cold sore. In fact,  it can break it open and cause it to spread to the rest of your lips! Ensure you take small bites.
