Anxiety comes in all shapes and sizes, and it’s safe to say that at some point in your lives you will experience anxiety of one sort or another, and in varying degrees. While many people still believe it is purely a condition that affects you mentally, it can actually produce many physical symptoms and can become a severely debilitating condition. So how do you treat a condition that has so many forms (general anxiety, social anxiety, performance anxiety, choice anxiety – the list goes on!)
The modern world has placed a large degree of importance on treating anxiety with medication. Make no mistake, medication works for some people, but in this article I wanted to look at alternative treatments and natural lifestyle treatments. Did you know, for example, that stopping smoking carries as many benefits as medication in reducing anxiety? In some cases, even more.
Kava
Kava is a plant that grows in the western parts of the Pacific, but is available worldwide as an alternative treatment for anxiety (specifically social anxiety). It has many health benefits, but treating anxiety is the chief among them. It’s also used to treat insomnia, which often stems from anxiety in people. Studies have proven that 150mg per day is effective at treating anxiety. You can find some examples of superior kava supplements at the end of this article.
St. John’s Wort
St. John’s Wort is traditionally used to treat depression (mild, moderate and even severe). Studies have shown it to be as effective as medicinal anti-depressants. But recently there have been studies into its effectiveness at treating anxiety that have had great results. It is still in early stages of tests and studies, but being a natural solution to anxiety gives it a great advantage over medication that often carry many side effects.
Aromatherapy
So many people associate aromatherapy only with massages, but this could not be further fro the truth. Aromatherapy has health benefits in short term memory, relaxation, pain reduction, and anxiety. Here’s how it works in a nutshell: The influence of the aroma on the brain through the sense of smell has anxiety reducing properties. Try it, you just might surprise yourself!
If you want to treat anxiety, as you can see above, sometimes the best kind of medicine is the natural kind.
