Let’s talk about upcycling

Towards the end of last year, the world went crazy for upcycling. It truly captured the imaginations of a vast number of people – largely because upcycling can take many different forms. For those who don’t know, let me quickly bring you up to speed.

Upcycling is all about reusing something you have to produce something of higher quality and higher value. It’s a craze that so many people have joined in with because it is incredibly cheap and also creates things of beauty from what many would see as waste materials.

Upcycling wood

If you’ve built something out of wood in the past, no doubt you will still have odds and ends lying around your shed. Whereas most people would simply discard these parts, instead you should put them to good use! You can reuse old wood to make tables, steps, desks, cupboards and much more. Just have a look at some of these upcycled masterpieces:

Upcycling in the garden

Perhaps the most popular form of upcycling right now is in the garden. Creating pot plants, flower beds, bird tables, water features and more using found materials has even become a lucrative career for some. Why not use old handbags and lunch bags as hanging flower baskets? How about upturning glass bottles and lining them around a flower bed as decoration? You can make your piece as creative as you want. Remember, it’s whether YOU think it looks nice.

Upcycling art

For a long time there has been an interest in upcycling art. Folk art, for example, has been popular for over a hundred years. Sculptures, paintings and statues are often built from reused materials. In the past few years, however, it has truly exploded in popularity. Max Zorn is an artist from the Netherlands who creates amazing art from brown packaging tape. Jeff Wassmann is an American artist who uses materials that wash up on beaches to create his works of art. You can paint on reused plastic or paper, or maybe build a statue or model with old metal.

Upcycling in business

The ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ is one of the biggest tragedies of our environment. It is a vast collection of marine debris that has built up in the Pacific ocean, mainly due to numerous plastics that have congealed together. It is the size of a country. Global businesses are now looking to reduce this waste by upcycling old plastic. This would have a great effect on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and indeed on the rest of the world. The ultimate goal is to bring this waste back into the mainstream and create new uses for it.

Upcycling has really taken off over the last few years, and looks set to continue rising in popularity.
