What you don’t know about diabetes can hurt you

You are at greater risk of developing diabetes if you:

  • Weigh more than 20% of your ideal body weight
  • Are over 30 years old
  • Have given birth to more than one baby weighing over 4kgs
  • Have a brother, sister or parent with diabetes

You have no idea anything is wrong with you then one day, your life is in danger because your blood sugar is out of control. Normally, your pancreas produces a hormone that helps your cells take in sugar – insulin.

But when you have diabetes, your pancreas may not produce any insulin at all- Type I diabetes. And, when your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or your cells don’t respond properly to it, it’s called Type II diabetes.

For both types, the result is the same – too much sugar circulating in your bloodstream. Type I usually strikes before the age of 20 and Type II after 40. Here are a few warning signs you should look out for:

Diabetes warning signs

Fatigue or a sense that something is wrong
Frequent urination
Unexplained weight loss
Slow healing of cuts and bruises
Blurry vision
Frequent bladder, gum and yeast infections
Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
Unusual hunger and thirst
Unexplained itchiness

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait. See your doctor immediately. Unfortunately, when you have high blood sugar, you also have to worry about high blood pressure because combined, these two can cause serious health problems. These include heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, nerve damage and tooth and gum problems.
