Since, I am doing my very best to live a stress free life,  I thought I would share some information on the 3 stages of stress.  The more aware we are of our coping mechanisms, and our stress levels, them more we are able to keep calm, and keep our stress under control.

“Every stress leaves an indelible scar, and the organism pays for its survival after a stressful situation by becoming a little older.”

Hans Selye (1907-1982)

In Hans Selye’s General Adaption Syndrome Model, he states that stress is compromised by 3 stages.  He stated that stress is a major cause of disease, because long-term stress can lead to chemical changes in the body

1. The Alarm Stage

This is when we realise that there is a possible danger, and we go into fight/ flight mode.  The main stress hormones are released, which equips us with energy to handle the situation.

2. Resistance Stage

If the stressor is resolved, homeostasis restores itself in the body, and renewal takes place.  If the stressful situation persists then the body, remains in a state of arousal.

3. Exhaustion Stage

When the stress has continued for sometime then, our bodies go into a state of exhaustion.  Otherwise known as chronic stress, this is when the most harm is done to our bodies.

What we should all be aiming at is a state of Recovery.

Here are 3 suggestions, as to how we can self – help ourselves to recover from stress.

1. Slow Down

We often need to force ourselves to slow down and take a break.  This gives ourselves time to rest, reflect and heal.

2. Get Support

Sharing our feelings with someone else, instantly reduces stress.  Depending on how severe your stress levels are, either turn to your loved ones, or seek help from a qualified practitioner.

3. Reevaluate our priorities

Time to re asses your hopes, dreams and goals.  Time to eliminate what is no longer serving you, and add more value to your life, with what you love and enjoy.
