Classic fairy tales try to make us believe Sleeping Beauty was the most beautiful woman when she woke up from her 100 year sleep. However, is there any truth behind this fairy tale? Well, lets explore…
There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to how much time you should spend sleeping. Some of us are rejuvanated with six hours, while others need at least nine hours. It all depends on things such as career, age, genetics and gender.
However, there’s one thing that’s for sure. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your body and brain WILL NOT be able to function at their best. The big question here is – Is beauty sleep a myth or a must?
Well, it’s definitely a must!
The lack of a good night’s sleep doesn’t only gives you puffy eyes, but also makes you look old
In a first-of-its-kind clinical trial, physician-scientists at University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center found that sleep quality impacts skin function and aging. They found that lack of sleep can increase the fine lines and wrinkles on your face. “This research shows for the first time, that poor sleep quality can accelerate signs of skin aging and weaken the skin’s ability to repair itself at night,” said Dr. Daniel Yarosh. Sleep deprivation is associated with paler skin, more droopy corners of the mouth and more wrinkles or fine lines.
Therefore, if you want to look younger and better, you have to get your beauty sleep. You won’t only look good, but sleeping well can help prevent health problems such as obesity and prostate cancer.
The only problems comes when you struggle to sleep.
If you experience numerous nights of tossing, turning and staring at the ceiling, there are few things you can do.
- Practice a simple breathing exercise or relaxation technique.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the afternoon and evening
- Read a book before going to bed
- Count backwards
Once you’ve learnt to sleep on time, train yourself to wake up at the same time everyday including on weekends.
